Infectious disease expert Marylyn Addo believes that masks will be made compulsory again in Germany this winter: “We will have a good summer. In the autumn, the number of illnesses will increase again. I assume that in winter we will return to protective measures such as mandatory masks – at least in public places and in rooms where it is difficult to keep your distance,” Addo said in an interview with the Rheinische Post newspaper on Tuesday.
Addo: COVID-19 could become an endemic disease in 2023
However, the professor from the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) does not expect any new lockdowns: “Due to the increasing immunity, I do not expect any lockdowns at the moment. Many people are vaccinated, although still not enough.” – She said. She then added: “Coronavirus will accompany us for years, but in 2023 it could become an endemic disease. The scenario could be as follows: as with the flu, the number of cases increases in winter, and risk groups need to protect themselves. But beyond that, following hygiene rules, airing out rooms and keeping your distance will help.”
Marylyn Addo expects that many vaccine candidates will not make it to the market dominated by Biontech and Moderna: “There are currently 196 and 117 COVID-19 vaccine candidates in preclinical and clinical trials, respectively. Of these, only a small fraction will make it to market,” Addo says.
