Olaf Scholz is the new German Chancellor!

After 16 years of Angela Merkel’s chancellorship (67), Olaf Scholz (63, SPD) is the new German Chancellor – he was elected by 395 members of the Bundestag. Scholz heads the first coalition at the federal level, which includes the SPD, the Greens and the FDP.

Olaf Scholz is the fourth SPD chancellor of Germany

Scholz is the fourth SPD chancellor after Willy Brandt, Helmut Schmidt and Gerhard Schröder. Immediately after his election, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will present him with the appointment letter at Bellevue Palace. Scholz must then take the oath of office in the Bundestag.

The appointment of the 16 ministers by the federal president will complete the government formation process a good ten weeks after the September 26 Bundestag elections.

A round of applause for Scholz in the Bundestag:

The CDU has had four chancellors so far – Konrad Adenauer, Ludwig Erhard, Kurt Georg Kiesinger and Helmut Kohl – as well as Chancellor Angela Merkel in the last 16 years.

Merkel sat in the honorary tribune of the Bundestag

Merkel sat in the honorary tribune of the Bundestag as acting chancellor. She received long applause after being welcomed by Bundestag President Bärbel Bas (SPD). Only the AfD parliamentary group disrespected the outgoing chancellor and remained seated.

Scholz will replace Merkel in the chancellor’s office this afternoon.
