The new vaccine Novavax is to be used by the states in Germany from next week – mainly in medical facilities. This was the information provided by a spokesman for the Federal Ministry of Health in Berlin.
The protein vaccine comes with the hope that more people who have reservations about the mRNA vaccines used so far will want to be vaccinated.
The federal government expects to receive 1.4 million doses of the Novavax vaccine this week, which will then be distributed to the states as soon as possible. The product was approved in the EU in December for all people 18 and older. The Standing Committee on Vaccination (Stiko) recommends two doses at least three weeks apart. For now, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers are excluded from the recommendations due to lack of data. Like other coronavirus vaccines that have been approved for marketing in the EU for some time, the drug is injected into the muscle tissue of the arm.
Novavax announced in June that the effectiveness of its vaccine is about 90 percent. It also protects against variants of the virus and 100 percent against “moderate to severe” disease. According to immunologists, it is also suitable for booster vaccinations.
