Germany will deliver 5000 military helmets to Ukraine

Germany wants to deliver 5,000 military helmets to Ukraine – a “very clear signal,” says Defense Minister Lambrecht. In turn, the Ukrainian ambassador speaks of a “purely symbolic gesture”.

German Defense Minister announces transfer of military helmets to Ukraine

Federal Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht has announced the donation of 5,000 military helmets to Ukraine. The Ukrainian government has asked for help in equipping its soldiers, the SPD politician said after a meeting of the Defense Committee in the Bundestag. “We immediately looked into it and will deliver 5,000 helmets to Ukraine,” she said. This is “a very clear signal: we stand by your side,” – she said.

Ukrainian Ambassador Andriy Melnyk welcomed the announced delivery of helmets, but at the same time criticized it as “only a symbolic gesture.” It is “just a drop in the ocean, it’s not even a consolation,” – He told the dpa news agency. “Ukraine expects a 180-degree turn from the German government, a real paradigm shift.”

“Equipment, not weapons”

Ukraine fears a Russian attack and has recently asked Germany, among others, for arms supplies. On January 19, the government in Kiev sent a letter to Germany’s Defense Ministry asking for equipment assistance, citing helmets and protective vests as essential. It’s equipment, it’s not weapons,” Lambrecht said of the supply of helmets. “But it helps, it gives support. And that’s how we will continue to operate in this conflict.”
