German health minister on pandemic: “The situation is slowly stabilizing”

At last, the numbers of new coronavirus infections in Germany are falling! Referring to the latest data on infections and hospitalizations, Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (58, SPD) tweeted Monday morning that “the situation is slowly stabilizing.” Specifically, he was referring to people infected with coronavirus who require treatment in intensive care units.

At the same time, he stressed the need to be careful that this downward trend is not reversed as a result of Christmas. And he added: “As the numbers of cases are still far too high, the booster vaccination campaign should be intensified.”

Lauterbach in favor of abolishing mandatory coronavirus testing for people vaccinated with a booster dose

On Tuesday, Lauterbach wants to present his plan to combat the pandemic to the health ministers of each state. Among other things, it assumes that people vaccinated with the third dose will no longer have to be tested for coronavirus.

In his opinion, the level of protection against coronavirus in this group is so high that it makes no medical sense to send such people for additional testing. In addition, the abolition of mandatory testing could be an incentive to receive a booster dose of the vaccine, Lauterbach said on ARD’s “Anne Will” program.

The health minister also defended plans to make vaccination universally mandatory. He said that while it was possible to do without it for the first mutations of the virus, this would likely no longer be possible for the more infectious Delta variant. “With the Omicron variant, this is even more pronounced,” Lauterbach said.
