A small town in the Hessian Odenwald with 13,300 inhabitants. In its center, surrounded by beautiful half-timbered houses, is the café “Café Zeitlos”. Last Friday, however, it was closed down by police officers.
The baker Andreas K. and his employees were alleged to have repeatedly violated coronavirus regulations and thus violated the Infection Protection Act.
As a result, 20 police officers closed the café at noon last Friday. Authorities suspect that K. issued certificates to his employees exempting them from wearing masks, did not wear a mask himself and urged employees to do the same.
Because customers complained about inadequate security measures, police had already visited the Werner-von-Siemens-Straße location on Thursday and closed it down. There were protests in the street until the evening, friends and some customers stood in solidarity with K.
Among them was Ralf Ludwig, a lawyer who supports the “Querdenker” movement. He called for support and rallied opponents of vaccination. According to a police spokesman, the spontaneous demonstration ended largely peacefully, but the order to close the premises by order of the authorities was upheld.
K. defied the order and on Friday morning opened his café as usual: customers could again enter through the store’s open door, which bears a large “ichmachdanichtmit” sticker (“I take no part in this”). Behind the counter were again workers without protective masks.
At about 1 p.m., police officers arrived on the scene to close the premises. Officials from the health department questioned K., and then police officers secured the café.
