Coronavirus in Germany: again more than a thousand patients in intensive care units

With the number of new coronavirus infections in Germany increasing for weeks, the number of covid patients in intensive care units is also increasing. For the first time since mid-June, this has exceeded the 1,000-patient threshold. What is striking compared to last year is that the patients are noticeably younger.

The number of covid patients in intensive care units in Germany is now the highest in more than two months

The number of covid patients treated in intensive care units in Germany has risen again to more than 1,000 people. As of Sunday, there were 1,008 COVID-19 patients, 485 of whom were connected to a ventilator. The last time the number of covid patients exceeded 1,000 was recorded in a daily report on June 18.

The lowest level before the fourth wave broke out was recorded in a July 22 report, when the number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care units was 354. Since then, occupancy has been rising again. As of Aug. 29 last year, the number was just 241, and it wasn’t until late October, during the second wave of the pandemic, that it rose to more than 1,000.

The highest number of patients treated in intensive care units due to COVID-19 was recorded in early January, during the second wave of the coronavirus in Germany, with 5,700 at the time. According to the German Hospital Association (DKG), around 5,000 cases nationwide are considered a critical point for hospitals, after which scheduled operations have to be postponed.

Patients much younger than last year

Unlike last year, the problem is no longer mainly affecting the elderly. According to the DIVI registry, now almost one in ten covid patients treated in the intensive care unit is between 30 and 39 years old, and almost one in five is between 40 and 49 years old (as of August 26, updated every Thursday). Those aged 50 to 59 make up more than a quarter of patients, and those aged 60 to 69 make up more than a fifth. Most severe cases and deaths occur among unvaccinated individuals.

The proportion of patients with COVID-19 in the total number of patients in intensive care units is currently particularly high in North Rhine-Westphalia (6.4 percent) and Saarland (5.3 percent).

Approximately ten days elapse between infection and hospital admission

Even if the incidence rate of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days does not continue to rise and even falls in the coming days, the number of covidien patients in intensive care units will initially continue to increase. The level of morbidity is always belatedly translated into hospital occupancy, as it usually takes about ten days from the date of infection to the date of admission.

The incidence of coronavirus in Germany is increasing

The number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days has been increasing in Germany for weeks, but in recent days not as much as before. According to the IRK, the rate was 74.1 on Sunday – 72.1 the day before and 54.5 a week ago. Health authorities in Germany reported 8,416 new coronavirus infections and 12 deaths to the IRK in one day.
